Actually, the 780 (unlike the 770) *does not* allow for voice-activated phone calls. The Phone command that was nowadays on the 770 is missing from the 780, and there is no other way of accessing the smartphone interface past voice only. Yous have to employ the controls on the screen. I contacted Garmin about this and they said it was past design.

Well, I'm because buying the 780. I accept the 770 now, had it for quite awhile. I Like you lot don't take to pay for traffic , something their competitor requires . And , to the 770'south credit , most of the time information technology's spot on. I take a 379 , and the windshield is not real big , and then I mount it up high , so I have a clear field of view. The drawback is that when the suction cup lets loose , it falls hard . I sometimes wonder if that's scrambled information technology's brain some.
For example , I like the mile markers in the lower corner . Now , they appear and disappear nilly -willie.
To , my other complaint is that the map database is not as good as Google Maps . Anytime I'm going to a new place , I bank check the 770 against Google . True , you lot tin't trust Google completely , as the routes are not truck specific , but doggone it , it rarely misses on an accost . Example : yesterday, I went to a completely new place . Google got it right , the 770 ( with warnings ) was taking me into a Large subdivision nearby. Same address in both. The 770 was wrong , Google was right .
So, I'1000 on the debate about upgrading . $400.00 is not pocket change . If their map updates were as accurate equally Google Maps , I would Gladly vanquish out the bucks .
Ane more thing . I'thousand on a family cellular information program . Any device that uses up my data allowance ( over 16 Gigs ) is out of the question . I employ about half of that myself , so I'm not willing to allow a device to connect to it , without knowing how much data it will burn thru.

I did have some trouble with the software right off the bat, equally I posted earlier. It looks like the GPS unit of measurement itself is fine. Yet, it doesn't come up with the SD card so you demand to buy i before yous even get-go installing 7 GB worth of software and map updates. I managed to get the software installed, merely the mapping update still fails even over fast Wi-Fi or straight from PC.

On the positive side, the unit is super well-constructed, you tin can drib it on the floor without it missing a shell, and both the magnetic and suction mounts work very well. Besides I similar that the Android app feels very familiar and uncomplicated to use.

This GPS has several new features that are not there on 770. There is no need for xm receiver if you want to use atmospheric condition and traffic. It tin can go it with bluetooth or wifi. All updates are done using wifi so y'all don't accept have information technology out of the truck and plug it into a calculator. It's built on tiptop of an Android tablet platform just like new Rand McNallys but the tablet is much more rugged than RM and information technology volition virtually likely last longer. The speaker on this unit is much louder than 770. Besides, the bluetooth connection seems much less prone to interference which was a big trouble with 770.
